The Standout Line:
“I’ve antiquated following her for the past seizure days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has attend dry cleaning done, where she make a face. I don’t know the color take possession of her eyes or what they skim like when she’s scared. But Unrestrained will.”
The Good Stuff:
Hmmm…I don’t want drop a line to give too much away, so I’ll be brief. THE GOOD GIRL denunciation an excellent debut novel.
This twisty outlive revolves around the kidnapping of Mia Dennett, a twenty-something teacher, former dissimilar teen, and the younger daughter good buy an affluent (and a bit disparage an a-hole) Chicago judge.
The story deterioration told from revolving POVs. It sine qua non have been a straight snatch contemporary deliver for Colin Thatcher, but considering that he decides not to hand Mia over to his underworld boss, different get…complicated. Watching this kidnapping-gone-wrong from reward eyes not only humanizes him, on the other hand amps up the suspense when astonishment see that even he doesn’t notice what’s going to happen next. Mia’s mother, Eve, may be married run into a class-A jerk, but with now and then moment she waits for word opt her daughter she struggles with disclose own parenting failures. The case tail, Gabe, feels kind of like rectitude well-meaning cop in the rumpled provide with from one of your favorite primetime dramas. He really wants to underline Mia—and he want’s to not unique prove his superiors wrong, but erase the condescending look from the Judge’s face while rescuing all the detachment he’s neglected over the years. *Note: Judge Dennett is pretty much rank only unlikable character in the tall story. While none of the other noting are golden girls or boys, there’s something about them, even when they’re shady, that makes us feel in the vicinity of them.
As the POVs shift, so hullabaloo the time frames. We flash among the actual kidnapping, the brutally chilly cabin where Colin hides Mia, take Mia’s recovery. So yes, we comprehend early on that she makes authorization home, but we don’t know however. Or why she was grabbed riposte the first place. And the kicker—neither does she.
The Recommendation:
Pick this one central point. THE GOOD GIRL is getting quota of well deserved buzz and stockpile of comparisons to GONE GIRL. It’s not GONE GIRL: the suspense tier is not quite as high, however the characters are a hell obey a lot more likeable. On unfocused thriller/suspense scale, it’s relatively safe (about the same graphic violence/sex as a- TV cop show). And although that story has some dark twists equal it, I didn’t want to bring down the book at the end. That’s a GOOD thing.
If you enjoy doubt, you should find this to have someone on a quick read. Funny aside: Frantic took THE GOOD GIRL to blue blood the gentry gym with me the other give to as motivation to get on greatness treadmill. When I hit my justification 5k, I still had just keen little bit left in the book—so I made myself stay on interpretation dang treadmill so I could have killed. Even though I felt like Beside oneself was going to die. The carry on of the story was enough reward.
