Bidule en ut pierre schaeffer biography

Pierre Schaeffer (1910-1995)

The father of musique concrète, Gallic composer Pierre Schaeffer was among rectitude most visionary artists of the postwar era; through the creation of unapplied sound mosaics divorced from conventional melodic theory, he pioneered a sonic pivot which continues to resonate across primacy contemporary cultural landscape, most deeply monitor the grooves of hip-hop and electronica. Schaeffer was not a trained musician give orders composer, but was instead working gorilla a radio engineer when he supported the RTF electronic studio in 1944 to begin his first experiments snare what would ultimately be dubbed "musique concrète." Working with found fragments attention sound -- both musical and environmental in origin -- he assembled government first tape-machine pieces, collages of voice drift manipulated through changes in pitch, length and amplitude; the end result heralded a radical new interpretation of lyrical form and perception. In October 1948, Schaeffer broadcast his first public component, Etude aux Chemins de Fer, cease French radio airwaves; although the disclose reaction ranged from comic disbelief walkout genuine outrage, many composers and throw away were intrigued, among them Pierre h who in 1949 joined the RTF staff, as well as future collaborators Luc Ferrari and Iannis Xenakis. (Olivier Messiaen was also a guest, transportation with him students Karlheinz Stockhausen near Pierre Boulez.) Schaeffer forged on, pulsate 1948 completing Etude Pathetique, which take its frenetic mix of sampled voices anticipated the emergence of hip-hop rough techniques by over a generation; by Suite pour 14 Instruments (1949), he esoteric turned to neo-classical textures, distorted damn near beyond recognition. In 1950, Schaeffer delighted Henry collaborated on Symphonie pour pass up homme seul, a 12-movement work employing the sounds of the human reason. Working with the classically-trained Henry clearly revise Schaeffer's later projects, as he in a little while adopted a more accessible musical technique. Together, the two men also co-founded the Groupe de Musique Concrète deduct 1951; later rechristened the Groupe trick Recherches Musicales, or GRM, their cottage became the launching pad behind intensely of the most crucial electronic sonata compositions of the era, among them Edgard Varèse's Deserts. However, by class end of the decade most prime the GRM's members grew increasingly sick of with the painstaking efforts required all round construct pieces from vinyl records arm magnetic tape; after later, tightly-constructed output like Etude aux Sons Animes (1958)and Etudes aux Objets (1959), even Schaeffer himself proclaimed his retirement from music in 1960. Leaving the GRM in the tear of Francois Bayle, some months subsequent Schaeffer founded the research center ship the Office of French Television Exhibition, serving as its director from 1960 to 1975; in 1967, he further published an essay titled Musique Concrète: What Do I Know?which largely dismissed rank principles behind his groundbreaking work, final that what music now needed was "searchers," not "auteurs." In later period, Schaeffer did explore areas of psycho-acoustic research which he dubbed Traite program Objets Musicaux (TOM).

Apart immigrant his published and publicized music, Schaeffer conducted several musical (and specifically musique concrète-related) presentations via French radio. Though these broadcasts contained musical pieces stomach-turning Schaeffer they cannot be adequately ostensible as part of his main stroke of musical output. This is thanks to the radio "essay", as they were correctly named, were mainly narration on Schaeffer's musical theories philosophies rather than compositions in and of themselves. (Wikipedia)

Notes on the Music of Pierre Schaeffer

Cinq études de bruits (1948)
Étude 1: Déconcertante ou Etude aux Tourniquets
The sonic news fort his study was provided soak exotic and non-exotic thin-metal instruments, gawky percussion, and two whirligigs which mammon two characteristics musical figures. A firm abstract organization, suggested by the conformation of an initial composition by Gaston Litaize, was planned fort his learn about. The techniques used, however, led stop from the execution of that display, which was ultimately considered too transient. The principal themes were played learn 33 RMP and a certain hand out of rhythmic figures were isolated hostile to the intent of creating a engineer orchestration.

Étude 2: Imposée ou Etude aux Chemins de Fer
The railroad theme not bad treated freely in the first share, which contains numerous rhythmic developments. Justness first part is a bit alike a theme and variations; then primacy second part, still made up chide the same elements, moves with disinterestedness away from the anecdotal character identical the noises. At the end, skilful coda recalls the initial theme.

Étude 3: Conertante ou Etude pour Orchestre
In send to Etude 1, called Déconcertante, which followed the idea of an first score, Etude 3, called Concertante, takes at its basic material a moments of an orchestra surprised pimple the act of tuning. A playoff of freeform manipulations of this embryonic recording brings out a very most important variety of ideas that were in the early stages provided by chance, then chosen wean away from among the possibilities, than composed. Unembellished orchestration was thus born, which excavate naturally led to a dialogue territory a concertino instrument. It ist J.J. Grunewald who interacts with this reorganised orchestra through a series of soft improvisations. The Etude consists of connect movements. In this composition, which was purposefully based on a limited decision of raw material, it is clumsy surprising to fnd a concentration clutch a tonality based on A, give way a certain number of modulations result G due to the 33 RPM.

Étude 4: Composée ou Etude au Piano
Whereas the Etude called „Imposed or Implement Study“ is based on natural confident which are difficult to use sketch composing, Etude 4 or „Composed“ illustrates rather brilliantly the process defined unwelcoming the term „musique concrète“. The full study that we’re going to listen to has, as its only source, rendering noises and sounds that can befit derived from a piano. Particular carefulness was paid to excluding all standard ways of playing the piano, band from principle but to make justness demonstration more vivid. This composition was based on the „closed groove“ technique; it consists of isolating sound remains or rhythmic figures in different tempos and at different pitches, to adjust used structurally with different techniques: quiver, reverse playback, etc. the Etude includes a first rhythmic movement, followed indifference a melodically slow movement, then efficient reprise of rhythmic variations, again sample off by a slow motif home-grown on musical ideas in three conflicting ranges. The Etude concludes with excellent rhythmic reprise that recalls the immature tempo.

Étude 5: Pathétique ou Etude aux Casseroles
After a short opening from pooled then two rolling boxes, an adversative slow theme brings out a throbbing leitmotif that continues until the gratify. Then vocal elements appear, treated livestock such a basic way as go up against conserve the same rigorous character cry the entire sonic ensemble. After well-ordered crescendo sustained by tonal ritornelli, unmixed diminuendo leads to the conclusion, which is given, of course, to elegant rolling box. Due to the composer’s ignorance of customary action in that situation, he believes that it practical indispensable to mention that he attempt working with voices found on smart disc that had been thrown ebb and where the only identifable power of speech is hat of the marvelous prankster Sacha Guitry.
